Confidence building for Gordon thanks to Northern Rights

Participant: Gordon Austin

Gordon has worked with Northern Rights for a number of years to build up his skills and confidence.

The 39-year-old, who has learning difficulties, had previously worked for Remploy, however when that closed he was referred to us.

We worked with Gordon to identify the types of roles that would be suitable for him, and we quickly found him a job with the Custom’s House in South Shields.

Sadly, when the pandemic started, Gordon was made redundant.

Gordon, who is now happily working at the Marriott Hotel as a kitchen porter, said: “Northern Rights have been brilliant for me.

“They’ve helped me get the job and I love it. I do lots of things in the kitchen including the dishes, cleaning the floor and generally keeping in nice and tidy. I hope the role becomes permanent.”

Gordon’s brother in law Brian Moon said: “The support we’ve had from Northern Rights has been a lifeline and I know Gordon is really enjoying his job. It’s brilliant for him as we were worried when he lost his job at Remploy, but now he is working and is so happy.”
