Remembering James

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our former colleague and friend, James Grogan.

James was a much-loved member of the Northern Rights team for 10 years and played a significant role in helping shape the organisation we are today. Through his dedication, professionalism and unwavering commitment to supporting others, he made a lasting difference to colleagues, participants and partners alike. His hard work, loyalty and willingness to always go the extra mile helped build the strong foundations of Northern Rights.

James will be remembered not only for everything he contributed to the organisation, but, more importantly, for the person he was. He was a man of integrity, compassion and genuine kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand, offer support or put the needs of others before his own. Whether supporting a colleague, participant or loved one, James cared deeply about people and always looked out for those around him.

For many of us, James was far more than a colleague. He was a great friend whose presence brightened the workplace and whose kindness, honesty and encouragement were valued by everyone who knew him.

James also had a wonderful ability to bring warmth and laughter wherever he went. Witty, intelligent and full of character, he had a fantastic sense of humour and an uncanny knack for lifting people's spirits. Never short of a story, a quick remark or a well-timed joke, he could make people smile even during the most challenging days. His humour, friendship and positive outlook will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

His kindness, humour and genuine care for others leave a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with James' family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

James will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by everyone at Northern Rights.

Rest in peace, James. πŸ’™

🌟 The Power of Partnership Working 🌟

At Northern Rights, we're fortunate to work alongside so many fantastic organisations that share our commitment to supporting people and creating opportunities. By working together, we can achieve so much more for our communities, and it's always rewarding to hear how these partnerships make a difference.

We're delighted to share this wonderful testimonial from Carol McAllister, Interim Chief Executive of Sensibility Matters (SAM), following a recent recruitment campaign:
"I contacted Northern Rights on 31st July to help us recruit an admin support worker for one of our members of staff with sight loss. Anita was very quick to reply and sent 2 CVs for people with the relevant experience.

We reviewed both candidates and felt one was more suited to the role on offer. We interviewed and appointed, all within 5 working days of initially contacting Northern Rights! Our new support worker started with us on Monday 24th August and is already settling into the team well.

I would like to thank Anita for such a quick response and her support in recruiting another support worker for SAM. Lesley-Anne and the team at Northern Rights are professional and quick to respond to employment opportunities with suitably qualified candidates.

I highly recommend Northern Rights and welcome the opportunity to work with them in the future."

A huge thank you to Carol for these kind words. We're proud to have supported Sensibility Matters with their recruitment needs and look forward to continuing to work together in the future.

Partnerships like this demonstrate the value of organisations supporting one another to create positive outcomes for both employers and local people.

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Michelle on starting her new job! πŸŽ‰

Michelle joined the Restart Programme with Northern Rights in July after spending time as a full-time carer. Returning to work after several years away from employment felt daunting, and she was understandably nervous about taking those first steps back into the workplace.

Working closely with her Advisor, Shelagh, Michelle began rebuilding her confidence by attending training sessions with Skills Trainer Leigh, where she quickly discovered she had more to offer than she realised. She embraced every opportunity, actively participated in sessions, and continued to grow in confidence.

With a refreshed CV and tailored support from the team, Michelle successfully applied for a position at Sea View CafΓ© in South Shields. Her hard work paid off when she secured an interview and trial, leading to a job offer and a successful start in employment.

As Michelle moved into work, our team continued to support her through Into Work and In Work Support, helping with practical costs such as work clothing and travel to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Michelle's journey shows that with the right support, determination and belief in yourself, it's never too late to take the next step towards a new opportunity.

πŸ‘ Well done, Michelle. Everyone at Northern Rights is incredibly proud of what you have achieved and wishes you every success in your new role.

πŸŽ‰ First Job Success: Congratulations, Elle! πŸŽ‰

When Elle joined Northern Rights, she was looking for support to secure her very first paid job. She also happened to be the first participant on Advisor Luke's caseload, making her journey an especially memorable one.

Already demonstrating commitment and motivation through her volunteer role at Roots for Change, Elle built valuable workplace skills, confidence and experience by regularly supporting the charity shop and taking on increased responsibilities.

To further prepare for employment, Elle attended workplace-focused training sessions delivered by Leigh, helping her understand workplace expectations and build confidence for the transition into work. Elle also attended targeted job search sessions with the Employment Consultants, opening up even more opportunities.

It was during one of these sessions that Employment Consultant Antonia introduced Elle to a Trainee Machinist opportunity with Barbour. Antonia supported Elle with her application, leading to her first ever job interview. With additional interview preparation support from Smart Works, including interview clothing and confidence-building guidance, Elle felt ready to take on the challenge.

We're delighted to share that all of Elle's hard work paid off and she was successfully offered the role!

At her final review, Elle reflected on how much the support from Luke and the wider Employment Consultant team had meant to her.

Congratulations, Elle! πŸ‘ We are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved and wish you every success in your new role with Barbour.

πŸŽ‰ First Job Succe

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations Syeda! A New Chapter Begins at Barbour

Congratulations to Northern Rights participant Syeda Begum, who secured a role as a Sewing Machinist with Barbour and started work in June!

Syeda joined the TARA Year 1 programme in December 2025 and worked closely with her advisor, Akhi, throughout her journey into employment. Akhi provided consistent one-to-one support, helping Syeda build her confidence, identify opportunities, and prepare for the recruitment process.

With encouragement and guidance from Akhi and the wider team, Syeda fully engaged with the programme, attending interview preparation and mock interview sessions, life skills workshops, a Smart Works appointment, and the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority Event in Newcastle. Her positive attitude, commitment, and willingness to take part in every opportunity helped her move closer to her goal.

Syeda also brought a wealth of experience as a sewing machinist, and through her hard work and determination, successfully secured a position with the iconic North East brand, Barbour.

Syeda's success shows the impact that personalised support, dedication, and belief in your own abilities can have when working towards employment goals.

πŸ‘ A huge well done to Syeda on this fantastic achievement, and we wish her every success in her new role!
